Safety training for managers

Role: I created all the design and interactions with Captivate, including presenter-led videos, a “gunman” video scenario, a SharePoint demo, weighted surveys, assessments and learning exercises.

Sample interactions:

Brief: Design and build online safety training for new managers. Produce self-paced online learning modules (less than an hour) which would replace traditional day-long instructor-led training.

Process: Worked with Subject Matter Expert to conduct needs assessment on what managers really needed to know about safety in their job role, in order to drastically trim down the potential instructional content and length of training. Did content analysis to determine what information would be presented, and what media would be most appropriate.

I also individually completed the full instructional design process and created a smaller and slightly different version of the module for a class in my master’s degree program, which you can read about in this PDF.

Result: Three e-learning modules (Risk Management, Harassment, and Safety Resources) ranging from 15-25 minutes each and deployed to over 200 managers worldwide via Moodle LMS.

Corporate philosophy training

Role: I created all the design and interactions with Captivate, including presenter-led videos, a branching scenario text exercise with a points system, a photo-based scenario with audio elements for each character, scenario-based quizzes, and a self-assessment that revealed silo or synergy tendencies.

Brief: Introduce managers to the 7 guiding principles of “The Komatsu Way,” the corporate philosophy of Modular’s parent company. Design and build self-paced online learning modules (less than an hour). No previously-existing training, only a handbook given to all employees.

Process: Subject Matter Expert scripted presenter video. Worked with SME to develop ideas for exercises and interactions for each principle. Created visual design from scratch (based on Komatsu-brand “blue swoop” PowerPoint background), produced videos, and created interactions using Captivate’s widgets and advanced interactions and variables.

Result: Two e-learning modules (principles 1-2, and 3-7), about 15 and 30 minutes each, deployed to over 600 employees worldwide via Moodle LMS.
